Jonathan Davis to remain a Colonial

Jonathan Davis will attend GW next year and join the men’s basketball program, head coach Mike Lonergan confirmed Thursday.

Davis signed a national-letter-0f-intent with the Colonials in November, but his status remained unclear following GW’s coaching change and  the release of fellow recruits Erik Copes and  Curtis ‘Trey’ Davis from their LOIs.

“Jonathan’s coming and we’ve definitely been in contact with him,” Lonergan said. “We’re looking forward to coaching him.”

Davis, who graduates from Simi Valley High School in Simi Valley, Calif., today, did not immediately return requests for comment.

The senior averaged 18.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game this season, helping his high school team post a 20-8 overall record.

Lonergan added that it’s still possible that the men’s basketball program will sign more recruits in the coming weeks to join Jonathan Davis and replace Copes and ‘Trey’ Davis on the roster. If GW doesn’t replace the two absences, he added, their scholarships would be used to sign recruits in the 2012-13 season.

“We’re talking to a lot of coaches and a lot of players. We could end up signing one player late,” Lonergan said. “If that [not signing any more players] happens, we would just probably keep those scholarships for the following year, which would probably give us four.”

“I’ll probably know a lot more in a week,” Lonergan added. “I’m not really allowed to comment anyways, but if it happens, it will happen quick.”
