Unlicensed vendors caught in Foggy Bottom

Regulatory officials shut down Wednesday three unlicensed vendors who were buying books from students and selling boxes on the Foggy Bottom Campus.

A D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs investigator was on campus that day for other business, issued citations to the operators and ordered the businesses to shut down, DCRA Legislative Affairs Specialist Helder Gil said.

Gil said the investigator noted one vendor selling boxes outside of Thurston Hall, but the operator could not produce the proper license to be conducting business along the street. The operator’s public space permit from the D.C. Department of Transportation, which was not designated for commercial business, was revoked.

Two other businesses were operating out of vans or trucks and buying textbooks back from students, a common practice at the close of every semester. But when approached by the investigator, they also could not produce the proper licenses, Gil said.

The two operations were issued citations and ordered to shut down as well – the typical consequences of being caught without the correct business licenses, Gil said.

He said the book buying businesses were operating near the Marvin Center.
