Men’s golf ends fifth for the day in A10 championship

This post was written by Hatchet staff writer Noah Cohen.

The men’s golf team headed to the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship this weekend.

Play began Friday at 8 a.m. at the 54-hole, par-72 El Campeon course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

The Colonials wrapped the day in fifth place, at +23, just two points shy of Temple, the program ranked immediately above them. GW combined to shoot a 311 and junior Andres Pumariega tied for eighth individually when he carded a 3-over-par-75.

The Colonials entered the tournament with hopes of expanding on last year’s championship outing, after GW left in fifth place overall.

The Colonials head to the tournament this year backed by greater experience and depth. This year’s youngest player is a junior, and head coach Terry Shaffer said the team is more confident and ready for the challenges on the course.

“Golf’s kind of an interesting game,” he said. “While you’re playing against other teams, you are not really playing against other teams.  You are playing against the golf course.”

The tournament will stretch over three days, with tomorrow’s play scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.

“I’m happy with the team the we have down here,” Shaffer said.  “Everyone is starting to gel at the right time.”
