Government shutdown would affect some federal work study students

Federal Work Study students with jobs at federal agencies will be unable to work in the event the government shuts down at midnight Friday.

Students with work study jobs on campus or with work study jobs off campus, but not with the federal government, would not be affected by the shutdown Congress is currently working to prevent.

Only those federal employees deemed essential will report to work, leaving many workers unpaid and affecting numerous District services.

“If the government shuts down, you will not be able to work until it reopens,” a Career Center e-mail reads.

The Student Employment Team at the Career Center said messages were sent Thursday to students currently working at federal agencies and the Federal Work Study partners at the agencies.
