Despite loss, Colonials regain stride against Xavier

The Colonials left Cincinnati with a loss, but the team’s 81-74 defeat at the hands of Xavier is not without its positives. The Colonials kept pace with the Muskateers all night, leaving behind the shooting woes that troubled GW last week against St. Bonaventure.

GW (10-10, 3-3 A-10), finished the game with a field goal percentage of 44.2 percent, driven largely by a 40-point first half that was largest amount of points Xavier has allowed an opponent to score in the first half all season. The Colonials also shot 94.7 percent from the line, maintaining pace with the Muskateers throughout the game.

Juniors Aaron Ware and Tony Taylor were especially strong for the Colonials. Ware started for just the second time this year, and stepped up in the role, putting 14 points on the board going 8-for-8 from the line. Taylor once again emerged as the hot-handed shooter for GW, adding 21 points and five assists throughout the night.

GW headed into Wednesday night facing a team that has gone 9-1 at home this season- a team that was coming in hot on a five game win streak. The Colonials didn’t back down in their defensive effort, holding Xavier to a shooting percentage similar to theirs (45.5 percent), and matching the Muskateers in steals and rebounds.

GW once again struggled in the second half, with its shooting percentage dropping by almost 20 to just 34.6 percent. Xavier was able to take control of the game in the last five minutes, going on an 11-2 run that ultimately lead to the Colonials’ defeat.

GW will look to build upon the strides it made against Xavier as the team travels back to DC to take on Saint Louis this coming Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. in the Smith Center.
