DDOT releases proposed locations for Capital Bikeshare

Areas near Foggy Bottom are part of the proposed expansion of D.C.’s bike-sharing program, according to a map released Tuesday by the District Department of Transportation.

The map shows 100 locations where bikes could be rented as part of Capital Bikeshare, a regional program that will give the public access to about 1,100 bikes in D.C. and at 14 stations in Virginia’s Arlington County.

The new program has grown from the success of SmartBike DC, which has 10 stations and about 100 bicycles.

Proposed bike stations are visible on and around GW’s Foggy Bottom campus on DDOT’s map. A SmartBike station already exists outside GW Hospital, but other locations include 1959 E St.- the residence hall near the Elliott School of International Affairs – and 982 21st St., which is near the corner of 21st Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

According to the DDOT news release, the locations were picked by examining population and employment densities, as well as proximity to transit and the number of people biking to work.

DDOT Transportation Planner Jim Sebastian told The Hatchet in June that the installation of the new stations could make Capital Bikeshare the largest program of its kind in the U.S. Sebastian said the agency hoped to have the locations complete by the end of the year.

In August,  installation on new bike locations is scheduled to begin. About 30 stations are expected to be launched in September.

The agency is working with Advisory Neighborhood Commissions to provide information and to get feedback from residents about the program and bike locations.

DDOT Director Gabe Klein is expected to speak on a variety of transportation issues at the School Without Walls on GW’s Foggy Bottom campus Wednesday evening as part of a monthly ANC 2A meeting, which is set to begin at 7 p.m.
