Former White House press secretary to teach at GSPM

Former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino will join the Graduate School of Political Management this fall as an adjunct professor for strategic public relations, Perino confirmed Wednesday.

Having served as press secretary for two years under President George W. Bush, Perino plans to use her White House connections to bring guest speakers to her classroom.

“Part of the reason I wanted to do this is my belief in the need for all of us to be healthy news consumers – I read and watch everything I possibly can – even things I don’t agree with – so that I can have a richer experience in the career I’ve chosen,” Perino said in an e-mail.

Perino’s master’s level class in political communications on advocacy, politics and public affairs will be open to select students who have completed the majority of their core courses, a news release said.

In an e-mail provided to The Hatchet, GSPM told students that most of the slots for Perino’s class will go to strategic public relations students but other GSPM students will have the opportunity to take her class. Alumni will not be able to audit the program and current students, by the start of the fall semester, will have had to complete 24 credit hours and have a 3.5 GPA.

“These minimum requirements are non-negotiable so please don’t ask for an exception as it will not be granted,” the e-mail said.

The class will be on Thursdays from 7:10 to 9:40 p.m.

Perino is currently working as a Fox News political commentator and runs her own consulting firm, Dana Perino and Company. In June, the Senate confirmed President Obama’s nomination of Perino to serve on the Broadcasting Board of Governors, overseeing government-sponsored broadcasting overseas.

The Hatchet reported in June that Perino was among a group of people GSPM was negotiating with to fulfill adjunct professor and guest lecturer positions. Perino also spoke at GW in March discussing communications and the press.
