Updated Friday

Jason Lifton has won this year’s Student Association presidential race, the Joint Elections Committee announced in the Marvin Center Thursday night.

Lifton beat rival Xochitl Sanchez, garnering 51.5 percent of the vote. When the result was announced, Lifton’s supporters hoisted him into the air, yelling and reciting Sigma Chi chants.

“After a clearly successful year, after a bunch of things were accomplished, the students said what they wanted,” Lifton, the SA’s current executive vice president, said. “I will continue fighting for students, advocating and doing what we’ve been doing all year.”

“And I don’t have a midterm tomorrow like I did last year!” Lifton added.

EVP candidates Logan Dobson and Rob Maxim will advance to a runoff in two weeks, the JEC said. Neither reached the required 40 percent plurality required.

Dobson received 1,106 votes and 27.8 percent, and Maxim received 1,043 votes and 26.3% of the vote.

“It was a really close race, I was outspent by all my opponents,” Dobson said. “I’m really looking forward to the runoff.”

Rob Maxim said he had a lot to celebrate.

“I’m also excited because it’s my 21st birthday,” Maxim said. “There’s one percent differentiating me from Logan, and now we’re going to see who has the greater support of the student body.”

Before any results were announced, a JEC member told the crowd that “a very large number of complaints” were filed against “a very large number of candidates.”

The JEC will meet tomorrow to consider the violations, but “a large number of candidates are at risk for being disqualified.”

According to the JEC Charter, if a candidate accumulates six or more election violations, they can be disqualified.

The biggest surprise of the night was the JEC’s announcement that joke candidate Steve Holt actually received enough votes to win both a Senior Class Council and Marvin Center Governing Board graduate seat. The JEC noted in the final results that they do not believe Steve Holt is an actual person.

The complete election results were posted on the JEC’s Web site Friday.
