Former mail room employee arrested after threats, Crime Alert says

A former GW employee was arrested and barred from campus this week, after he called in a “non-specific threat to harm members of the GW community,” according to a University Crime Alert.

James Ripley Markley Jr.

James Ripley Markley Jr. was arrested and charged by the Metropolitan Police Department Feb. 15, and was released from custody on Wednesday evening, according to the Crime Alert, prompting the e-mail to the GW community warning of Markley’s presence on campus.

Markley is a former mail room employee who has not worked for the University for several years, Candace Smith, executive director of media relations said in an e-mail.

“We are not sure why he has made this threat,” Smith said.

On Feb. 16, Markley was charged with one count of threatening to kidnap or injure a person – a felony – according to information from D.C. Superior Court.

UPD will increase their presence on campus in areas where Markley had contact with faculty or staff, according to the Crime Alert.

“Mr. Markley is not wanted by law enforcement personnel at this time but will be arrested if he enters the GW Campus area,” according to the Crime Alert. “Should you speak to or encounter Mr. Markley please use caution and immediately call the GW Police Emergency Line: 202-994-6111.”
