Earthquake in Haiti hits close to home for GW senior

Tuesday’s earthquake, the worst to hit Haiti in 200 years, hit close to home for some students.

Senior Adolf Alzuphar – who lives about five miles from the epicenter of the earthquake and whose house is now part of the rubble – said that although he cannot return to Haiti to help with the relief efforts, he said he cannot just sit idly by.

Instead, Alzuphar is trying to collect canned foods, money and clothing to send to Haiti in hopes of making a difference.

Alzuphar said he worked with the University to get permission to put collection boxes in the lobby of every dorm on campus, and urges students to donate whatever they can to the cause.

Whatever is collected will be given to Unicef – a United Nations organization – to ship to the victims in Haiti.

“It’s horrible,” Alzuphar said. “Right now this is a test of our character. What do you do in a situation like this? The best that I can do is raise money and collect clothes and food.”

Other GW students are eager to help out with the cause.

Sophomore Matthew McDermott said he donated $20 toward the relief efforts in Haiti through the Red Cross and encouraged his friends to do the same.

“Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, and after seeing the initial pictures of total devastation I though it was the least I could do,” McDermott said.
