Swimming wraps up Patriot Invitational

The GW men’s and women’s swim teams participated in the three-day Patriot Invitational meet at George Mason this weekend, with numerous swimmers surpassing or nearing personal bests across several events.

Junior Paola Leor won the 100-yard freestyle event Sunday finishing .21 seconds behind her GW-record time in the event with a time of 51.31.

In Sunday’s 200-yard breaststroke, senior Katrina Timlin – who also placed fifth in the 100-yard race Saturday – took seventh place with a 2:27.57 time, 30 hundredths of a second short of her personal record. Junior Sarah Beggs set a personal best in the 200-yard backstroke by a nearly three seconds with a time of 2:08.49, good for 11th place, two spots ahead of senior teammate Emily Leik.

The young men’s team was led in the 200-yard backstroke Sunday by a trio of freshmen, with Alex Etz finishing 10th, Jim Coleman taking 15th and Zach Peart placing 22nd. The squad’s two 400-yard freestyle relay teams finished eighth and 16th in the 18-team field, with the eighth-place team consisting of Etz, sophomore Marshall Seedorff, and freshmen Niklas Glenesk and Stephen Nelson.

GW will host its second meet of the season Dec. 5 at Smith Center against Old Dominion, with races scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
