A huge burden has been lifted from the University of the District of Columbia. UDC has spent years torn between dual roles as a community college and state university. Last week, the Community College of the District of Columbia opened its doors for the first time. Although still located on the UDC campus, the community college has ambitions to expand to its own location and establish itself as a major presence amongst two-year institutions in the metro area. This is a great development for the District, where a third of the city’s jobs require some education beyond high school, according to the Brookings Institute.
GW has an opportunity to guide and assist this new school in our city. As an established neighboring institution, GW has knowledge and experience dealing with issues specific to colleges in the region. We have the chance to provide CCUDC with advice and resources whenever the new school may reach out to us. We welcome our new neighbors to the District, and wish them success in creating a respected and effective educational resource for our nation’s capital.
