Holocaust Museum shooter remains in critical condition at GW Hospital

James von Brunn, the man charged with the murder of a security guard at the Holocaust Memorial Museum last Wednesday, remains in critical but stable condition at GW Hospital, FBI Public Affairs Specialist Lindsay Godwin said Monday.

Von Brunn entered the lobby of the museum last week with a rifle around 1 p.m. and shot Stephen Tyrone Johns, a 39-year-old special police officer. Two security guards returned fire and von Brunn was shot in the face, according to several news reports. The two men were rushed to GW Hospital, where Johns was pronounced dead.

“This is a joint investigation with the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Park Police,” Joseph Persichini, FBI assistant director in charge of the Washington Field Office, said in a statement. “We are pursuing dual tracks for charging purposes: one for the homicide of Officer Johns, and the other for domestic terrorism/civil rights/hate crimes.”
