Foggy Bottom Grocery may become sandwich shop

Two GW graduates are in talks with the University to become tenants of the building now occupied by the Foggy Bottom Grocery near the corner of 22nd and F streets.

Former Student Association President and 2005 graduate Kris Hart and 2006 graduate Devlin Keating hope to take over the grocery store, which will be prime location next year when the University’s new residence hall at 2135 F Street is complete. Hart said last month that the two hope to open a sandwich shop in the building and maintain some type of grocery store by opening the lower level.

Both Hart and Keating declined to comment further, since talks with the University – the property’s owner – are not yet complete. Although they were hesitant to comment on exact changes, Hart and Keating said they plan to remodel the building extensively, a process they estimated would take about three months.

Barring any setbacks in the process, Hart said earlier this week that construction should begin in April with a grand opening set for September.

Both Keating and Hart said last month that talks with the University are in their final stages, and that they are “99 percent sure” that the deal will go through. The negotiations have stalled recently, however, and the project may have to be pushed back Hart said Tuesday.

A representative of the University’s Office of Real Estate declined to comment last month.

The venture is not Hart’s first entrepreneurial experience in Foggy Bottom – he currently owns Relaxed Day Spa, a tanning salon at 21st and F streets.
