Michelle Obama volunteers at Miriam’s Kitchen

This post was written by senior staff writer Gabrielle Bluestone.

When the homeless men and women who eat at Miriam’s Kitchen, a soup kitchen located just off campus at 24th and G streets, were told a special meal had been prepared for them, one important detail was left out – Michelle Obama would be serving it.

The first lady doled out risotto, steamed broccoli, fresh biscuits, muffins and fruit salad Thursday afternoon, said Sara Gibson, director of development at Miriam’s Kitchen. The White House donated most of the fruit for the side dish – enough for two weeks, Gibson said.

“It was a really powerful moment for our guests,” Gibson said. “Her presence really just affirmed out community and really showed that our guests are valuable members of our community.”

Obama worked for about 20 minutes, serving food and later speaking with diners, Gibson said.
