Last-minute options

Are you aching for a break from snow and school, but haven’t had time to plan anything past your next all-nighter? Don’t fret, there’s still time to plan an awesome spring break. And, conveniently for GW, a branch of STA Travel – the largest student travel agency in the world – is located right in the basement of the Marvin Center to help.

If you’re already sick of sleet and snow, a beach vacation might be your best option. Jennifer Apple, STA Travel’s branch manager, said that Cancun and Jamaica are the most popular of these destinations, both of which allow you to book a package as long as space allows. You can generally get a package deal for one of these hot spots for less than a thousand dollars.

If that sounds appealing but you’re not planning on picking up a passport, Miami is a comparable beach within the U.S. Apple said that Miami can be “a little tricky” in terms of purchasing airfare, but that it is still one of the most popular destinations. According to the STA Travel web site, packages start at $301.

If you’re just not a beach person, consider spending your spring break in Europe.

“March is a good time to go to Europe, because it’s the low season for airfare,” Apple said. “It’s the cheapest time to go, especially if people stay in hostels.”

The only thing you have to worry about is your flight filling up, so stay away from peak flying days if you plan on trying to book late.

Should one of these last-minute options look appealing, book it quickly. You can only book the packages as long as space remains available, and students often start booking their spring breaks as early as October. This year has been an especially early season; Apple said that many more people booked trips before Christmas than usual, and there were even people who came in the first week of classes last semester. But if you’re one of the students who has waited until now, Apple suggests you try to figure out plans as soon as possible.
