A car flipped over on the corner of 23rd and H streets around 3 p.m. today, narrowly missing bystanders on the sidewalk and forcing police to divert traffic in all four directions.

No one was seriously injured in the accident, including the driver of the flipped car, a green Honda CR-V, which landed upside down and partially crushed against a traffic light post.

Danielle Steinberg, a senior, said she was standing in front of Fulbright Hall, across the street from where the CR-V landed, when the accident occurred. She said students helped pull the driver, a woman named Mary who asked not to be identified by her last name, out the passenger-side window.

“People on the street helped and students came pouring out of Hillel,” Steinberg said. “I cannot believe she got out okay.”

Mary sustained a minor wrist injury and was treated for the cuts by paramedics on the sidewalk. Before being taken away in an ambulance, Mary said she had been driving down 23rd Street when the other car, a blue minivan, “broadsided” her.

She said, “I have no idea where he even came from.”

Metropolitan Police Department officers on scene refused to comment.
