Walking Tour: The District’s Must-Sees

Pennsylvania Avenue is one long stretch of history. Here are some cool stops en route to the street’s most famous resident: the White House.

Walking Tour - Graphic

Start at the Capitol Building (1), taking in the expansive National Mall from the marble steps. Then follow Pennsylvania Avenue past the East Building of the National Gallery (2) and the Canadian Embassy (3) to the site of the National Archives (home of the Constitution) and Navy Memorial (4). On Seventh Street, you can catch a glimpse of D.C.’s growing Chinatown (5) or travel the 10th Street route, passing Ford’s Theater (6), site of Lincoln’s assassination.

The J. Edgar Hoover Building (7), which houses the FBI, is also in this area, between 9th and 10th streets on Pennsylvania Avenue. Turn right onto 15th Street, where you’ll pass the Department of the Treasury (8), which is pictured on the $10 bill. Take one more left back onto Pennsylvania Avenue and the White House (9) will be on your left.
