Montgomery College adjuncts vote to unionize

According to the Washington Post, the adjunct professors at Montgomery College in Maryland voted to join the Service Employees International Union Local 500, the same union that represents GW’s adjuncts. The professors voted 365 to 105 in favor of unionizing, ending three months of negotiations between the college and faculty.

GW’s adjunct professors voted to join the SEIU in 2004. The University challenged the ruling in federal court, claiming that 30 independent contractors who were eligible to vote were not aware of the election and their vote. The United States Court of Appeals ruled against the administration, and the two sides agreed to begin negotiations on an adjunct professors contract. An agreement was reached in January.
