Men’s basketball signs fourth recruit

The GW men’s basketball team has inked a fourth incoming player for next year. Dwayne Smith, a 6-foot-5 forward, confirmed Sunday that he signed a National Letter of Intent with the Colonials last week.

Smith is attending Pickering-Ajax High School in Ontario, Canada, and helped lead the Trojans to their second straight Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championship.

Smith cited GW’s trademark fast-paced system as his main reason for choosing the school.

The Colonials’ most recent addition also played for Grassroots Canada, an Amateur Athletic Union team that won the 2008 Pittsburgh Jam Fest.

Smith said he is an aggressive player and plans to contribute through rebounding and cutting to the basket to score. While he said he can “shoot a little bit,” he plans to improve his shot before arriving at GW.

The Toronto native is the fourth recruit to commit to GW after Tony Taylor signed last fall and Matt Allbritton and Aaron Ware signed with the Colonials on April 16. Incoming recruits are guaranteed an athletic scholarship for “one full academic year,” according to the National Letter of Intent program’s Web site.

NCAA regulations allow teams to award 13 athletic scholarships per year. Last year the Colonials had 12 players on athletic scholarship, but with the departure of senior Maureece Rice – and pending scholarships of Allbritton, Smith, Taylor and Ware – GW appears to have two too many (15) scholarships lined up for next year.

The University has not released any information regarding the departure or loss of scholarship for any current players. Sports Information Director Brad Bower said head coach Karl Hobbs would not comment on the situation.
