GW Brief: School of Business to offer sports management master’s program

Web Extra

The School of Business will offer a dynamic new master’s program for graduate students in search of hands-on experience in the sports management field starting this fall.

The program, which will initially only accept 10 graduate students, will provide participants the opportunity to take courses that incorporate experience at new Nationals Stadium and the Washington Redskins’ FedEx Field.

Lisa Neirotti, associate professor of sports management and tourism studies, said the program is one of a kind.

“With this program my intent was to differentiate it from the others,” said Neirotti, who was largely responsible for developing the program. “It is extremely unique and brings with it a great amount of potential.”

The new masters program will continue accepting students until May 1. Those chosen for the program will take core MBA courses in an accelerated format, leaving time to fulfill the required 30 hours of on-site, compensated work at the stadiums. Students must also complete an additional 48 credit hours – 24 of which are electives focused within the sports management department.

“A solid education in business, an extensive knowledge of sports and an adequate experience in the field are the three most crucial aspects of succeeding in the world of sports management,” Neirotti said.

Murat Tarimcilar, associate dean for graduate programs, said the new program would be enticing and appealing for potential students.

“I believe the opportunity for a program like this may ignite the interests of many, as it is a very catchy topic,” he said. “I am enjoying the reaction we are getting from this little piece.”
