J Street’s Smart Market to stay open until 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday

Smart Market, one of the food vendors at J Street, will now be open until midnight from Monday to Thursday, Student Association officials said last week.

The Smart Market concession serves Starbucks coffee, Ya Ya’s sushi, grab-and-go salads and sandwiches, Bread and Chocolate dessert as well as a variety of beverages and snacks.

Last week, the SA announced that Columbian Square extended its hours until 2 a.m. to accommodate student needs for more study space. SA President Nicole Capp, a junior, said the University will consider extending Smart Market’s hours even further if GW administrators determine that students are using Columbian Square during these extended hours.

“It is my sincere hope that students take advantage of the new hours at Marvin Center and the now-expanded food options in J Street,” Capp said. “If students use the space and take advantage of the new hours, we can and will lobby for even later hours.”

Francis Murray, SA director of dining and retail services, said he hopes Marvin Center will become a popular late night destination for GW students.

“(Extended hours at this venue is) another chance for students to spend their mandatory spending money on late night snacking,” said Murray, a sophomore.

While Capp and Murray said they are pleased with the extended hours of the Smart Market venue, they both said their efforts to improve on campus dining are not yet complete.

“The work to improve dining on our campus is never done,” Murray said. “We are always making adjustments with Sodexho to help them cater better to the needs of students. We are a long way off from perfect dining at GW, but we have certainly come a long way.”
