$5-$10-$20: An entertainment guide for the cash-strapped college student

If you have $5

Stay on campus and head to Lisner Downstage for some student theater. This weekend, Generic Theatre Company is putting on “Amadeus,” the story of Mozart’s unfortunate involvement with a rival composer. Next week, get in touch with your hippie side at a performance of HAIR, Forbidden Planet Productions’ rendition of the “tribal rock-love musical.” Tickets for both are only $5.

If you have $10

This week is prime for catching some of your favorite GW bands in local clubs across the D.C. area. On Thursday, the jazz, funk and hip-hop band Hello Society will grace the stage at the Velvet Lounge (915 U St. N.W.) along with Bottles/Cans and Baltimore’s own Basshound. Also, be sure to catch Jukebox the Ghost at the Rock and Roll Hotel (1353 H St. N.E.) on Friday, with Ra Ra Riot and These United States.

If you have $20

Attention Deadheads! Grateful Dead cover band Dark Star Orchestra will be playing for two nights in a row at the 9:30 Club (815 V St. N.W.) on Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1. The band often plays out in Virginia, but now is the time to catch them in the heart of D.C. as each show promises to recreate a unique Dead experience for fans both young and old.
