What’s on our iPod: “Across the Universe” Soundtrack

With the recent theater release of Julie Taymor’s “Across the Universe,” a musical film that incorporates renditions of 33 compositions by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, many Beatles’ fans hesitate when they hear that the soundtrack is performed by the actors and actresses of the film. Although there are a few noteworthy Beatles covers orbiting around today’s music scene, such as Fiona Apple’s version of “Across the Universe” or Ray Charles’s version of “Yesterday,” most Beatles’ fans nevertheless prefer the originals.

However, Beatles’ fans need not be distressed by the soundtrack of “Across the Universe.” From an intense gospel choir version of “Let It Be” to a psychedelic cover of “I Am The Walrus” by U2’s own Bono, the soundtrack of “Across the Universe” both revamps and highlights the endemic works of the Beatles and should satisfy most fans. Needless to say, the movie would have been disappointing without the soundtrack.
