$5 – $10 – $20: An entertainment guide for the cash-strapped college student

If you have $5

Use it to take the Metro to Gallery Place/Chinatown to see the Harry Benson: Being There photography exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery. A controversial pioneer in photojournalism, Benson photographed everything from the Beatles coming to America, Martin Luther King Jr., Robert Kennedy’s assassination, Michael Jackson and George W. Bush.

If you have $10

Check out the new Tonic restaurant on campus in the old Quigley’s Pharmacy building on the corner of 21st and G streets. Their sandwiches, salads, pizzas and other comfort foods are actually quite tasty and usually under $10, and the atmosphere is also quite nice. Plus, they serve Tator Tots with your food! You can’t get more Napoleon Dynamite than that. Now if only they could get that liquor license.

If you have $20

Pretend you’re on vacation and head over to the Omni Shoreham Hotel (2500 Calvert St. NW) and take advantage of their pool and special happy hour. For $15, you can use their exquisite pool and locker rooms, and you also get one complimentary drink, including their fresh frozen fruit cocktails. But hurry, the offer lasts only until Sept. 16.
