WEB EXTRA: Take cover: Good Charlotte play secret show, plan world domination

The sun has come out from behind the dismal clouds. Its radiance shines once again on our forlorn faces, reminding us how it feels to truly live again. That’s right, Good Charlotte is back! Joel and Benji, the Waldorf, Maryland Madden dream team, delivered an impassioned musical tour de force Friday night that left the Black Cat ringing with the resonance of the heavens.

Well, maybe not. But then again, maybe so. You weren’t there to say. Only those lucky few who happened to convince Mom to load up the van for one more trip into the District, were deeply in tune with the happenings of the depths of Myspace, or coincidentally fell off their high horses at the corner of 14th and U know for sure. We can thank our sponsors NewsCorp., Chili’s, and Best Buy for the opportunity.

The boys served up all the hits. “The Anthem,” “Boys and Girls,” and “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” came roaring back from their lost but not forgotten exile on the radio ten minutes ago. The hardcore Good Charlotte vanguard went crazy as only the hardcore Good Charlotte vanguard can. The moms and dads in attendance were glad to get out by about 11:30. The rest of the bunch played their cards close to their vests. Maybe they had merely wandered in and become disoriented; the whole affair was free after all. The band didn’t exactly blow the doors off their hinges-the crowd would be best described as moderate-but for anyone who secretly loves the HOT FM, fondly remembers any of a dozen teen movie soundtracks, or just enjoys drunken fun with the most ridiculous (“ridiculous” being code for “fantastic”) scene kids that the 9th grade at Woodrow Wilson High has to offer, this was a good night.

If not, too bad, because once again Good Charlotte is back. Back to dominate that HOT FM and those brief music video clips on MTV that mark time between “Parental Control” blocks. You aren’t going to evade them. If you go to the mall you’ll probably trip over all their new “Good Morning Revival” merchandise and break your arm. If you go home your little sister’s friends will make you pay for ridiculing their J-14 boy idols. Good Charlotte is back, and we had best get used to them. Why? Because Sony Music commands it so, and Joel and Benji go platinum just by getting out of bed in the morning.
