Reigning Atlantic 10 basketball champion Xavier is heavily favored to finish first in the league this year. GW overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to beat Xavier in Cincinnati last season. The Musketeers lost to Gonzaga in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in March.

The Colonials earned 13 of 18 possible first place votes. Juniors Kimberly Beck and Sarah-Jo Lawrence were selected to the All-Conference First Team and Defensive Team. The Colonials made it to the second round of the round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
