Not such a bad neighborhood
I wanted to express my opinion and partial opposition to the “Bar Belle” (Sept. 14, p. 8).
I live two blocks north of the bar you reviewed, The Red & The Black (1212 H St., N.E.), and I found the repeated mention that the neighborhood is dangerous to be offensive. Granted, the cab driver may have said these things to the writer, but I wish that she hadn’t written them in a published article.
Our neighborhood is changing, granted, but I have not been at all afraid to walk around at midnight. I am an older white single female, and I find the neighbors anything but “plebeian.” I think visitors will find these neighbors hanging at any of the new venues that have sprung up in our area.
The Washington Post featured our up-and-coming bars in last Friday’s Weekend section, and the traffic was subsequently heavy, with scarce parking on Friday and Saturday nights. Scared patrons – I doubt it!
