Baseball

GW graduates Dan Pfau and Derrick Lutz were drafted in the MLB’s first-year player draft. Pfau was picked up by the Washington Nationals and Lutz by the Cincinnati Reds. Josh Wilkie signed a free agent contract with the Nationals.

Volleyball

After two dismal seasons, the volleyball squad opened the season with a 3-1 victory over Georgetown and 3-1 wins over American and George Mason in the DC challenge. Janine Brown, a junior outside hitter, was named the tournament’s most valuable player, leading the Colonials with 17 kills against the Hoyas, 24 kills against the Eagles and 16 kills against the Patriots. The Colonials will try to improve to 4-0 Sept. 2 against Fairleigh Dickinson at the Smith Center.

M. Soccer

Junior Greg McKay had a goal and an assist to lead GW to a 2-0 victory over Howard in the final game of the D.C. College Cup at American Sunday. The Colonials lost their first game to Georgetown 5-2 Aug. 25 in their first match-up of the year. They return to the field Sept. 1 at Towson.

This summer, the soccer team promoted goalkeeper coach Bryan Davis to assistant coach after former assistant Jake Ouimet left to lead Atlantic 10 rival Duquesne.

Golf

Recent graduate Brian Carroll qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Tournament, held in mid-July. He finished tied for eighth after two rounds but was eliminated in the third round. It was his second year in the prestigious tournament.

Coaching Changes

Greg Munoz replaced Tom Hawkins as head coach of men’s tennis. Former Georgetown assistant coach Kim Staehle was named head coach of the softball team. Liz Dancause, a former captain of the women’s basketball team, joined the staff as director of basketball operations.
