WEB UPDATE: Taxi runs into McFadden’s Restaurant, injures four

Posted Wednesday, June 28, 6:48 p.m.

Four people were injured Tuesday night after a taxicab ran onto a sidewalk on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of a bar popular with students.

An injured McFadden’s employee was taken to the GW Hospital and a former employee of McFadden’s who was also outside when the accident occurred was taken to Georgetown Hospital, a manager at the bar said.

McFadden’s manager Brian Westlye said the employee who was hit, who he would not name, was in “stable condition” on Wednesday.

“He suffered some injuries to his left leg and should be out, we hope, in a week to 10 days,” Westlye said.

Two people were hit by the cab outside of McFadden’s Restaurant and Saloon on the corner of 24th and Pennsylvania Avenue on the wet and rainy Tuesday night around 11 p.m. The cab ran onto the sidewalk and into a McFadden’s employee who was standing outside the building. After being hit by the car, the employee collided with a glass window that shattered upon impact, said a witness to the accident.

Former D.C. resident Michael Flannery witnessed the accident and said the taxicab was hit by another car from behind and turned almost 180 degrees before running onto the sidewalk. Flannery said he heard the cab’s wheels skid before he saw the McFadden’s employee get hit.

The former employee who was sent to Georgetown Hospital was released at 4 a.m. Wednesday with minor scrapes and bruises, Westlye said.

Pennslyvania Avenue, which the cab was traveling on before careening onto the sidewalk, was wet from a full day of rainy weather.

Sixth Battalion Fire Chief Bruce Faust said Tuesday night the other two people injured in the accident were sent to Howard University Hospital.

McFadden’s evacuated the approximately 250 people who were in the bar when the incident occurred, Westlye said. The bar and restaurant was closed Wednesday afternoon but re-opened at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday night, Westlye said.
