WEB UPDATE: Johnny Rockets to replace the Gap

Posted Tuesday, July 25, 9: 15 p.m.

Johnny Rockets will replace the 20th street space formerly occupied by Gap, which left the mall after last spring semester. A Gap spokesperson said that once the lease lapsed, the store assessed its financial situation and decided to close.

Mimi Somerman, senior vice president of marketing for Johnny Rockets, said plans for the venue are very preliminary. She added that the diner-style restaurant chain does not know when construction will start or when the venue may open. The Washington Business Journal reported this month that the restaurant chain plans to open by February.

Somerman also said she does not know if the restaurant will be open 24 hours or if it will accept GWorld.

“Johnny Rockets values the local community including the nearby University,” she said. “Once the restaurant opens, the operations management team will work with the University on local programs.”

Johnny Rockets isn’t planning to recruit employees from the student body. Somerman said, “Johnny Rockets will accept applications from qualified applicants.”

Currently, there are three Johnny Rockets in the District. They are located in Dupont Circle, Georgetown and Union Station.
