WEB UPDATE: GW gears up for Seinfeld

Posted Tuesday, July 25, 9:11 p.m.

After this October’s Colonials Weekend, Jerry Seinfeld will be added to a list of comedians that includes Jay Leno, Jon Stewart and Whoopi Goldberg.

The University announced that the star of the hit comedy “Seinfeld,” which ran for nine years on NBC, will perform two shows during Colonials Weekend on October 20 at 7 and 10 p.m. in the Smith Center.

Tickets for the shows are already on sale and can be purchased online at GWired. Tickets cost between $57 and $125, an increase from the tickets for Jon Stewart Colonials Weekend performances last year that cost $45.

University administrators met with representatives from student organizations, the alumni association and the parent association to decide who to feature for GW’s annual parents and alumni weekend. The University was in negotiations with Seinfeld for about a month before finalizing his Colonials Weekend contract, Konwerski said.

“GW sought a national act of the type of caliber our parents, students and alumni have appreciated over the past few years,” Peter Konwerski, assistant vice president for Student and Academic Support Services wrote in an e-mail last week. “Jerry is certainly one of the most prominent, entertaining and skilled comedians of his generation and when we realized we had the chance to bring him to campus, we jumped at the chance to offer this to our community.”

This year, proceeds from certain floor seat sales will go to the University’s general scholarship fund in addition to the Stephen Joel Trachtenberg Scholarship fund, according to a press release issued by the University. The SJT Scholarship fund provides tuition, fees, room and board for select D.C. public school students.

The University is planning events for the second night of Colonials Weekend on Saturday October 21, Konwerksi said. In past years the weekend has included a musical act in addition to the comedy act. GW has hosted such musical performers as Ray Charles, the Beach Boys, Patti LaBelle and last year’s performers, the Boston Pops.
