The Bar Belle: Brunch in the District

As the house parties around campus start to become more constant and the weather beckons me to stay and play outside, my drinking priorities in the past couple of weeks have shifted.

After a year of hearing my roommate talk about how awesome brunch is in D.C. on Sunday mornings, I finally decided to check it out for myself. Plus, it’s socially acceptable to drink before noon, so I figured brunch couldn’t be all that bad.

Georgetown is usually the last place I head to do anything in the District. My hangover couldn’t take a longer walk or the sunlight for a duration of longer than 17 minutes. So while being sheltered by a group of 20 from the blaring car horns and well-dressed souls on the way to News Caf? in Georgetown, I was thrilled to walk into a restaurant and immediately be greeted by the smell of cr?pes and Nutella.

I was also thrilled by the soft, natural lighting of News Caf? and the Moroccan-inspired d?cor. From tile-mosaic tables, to insanely comfortable bench seats with plush pillows and red velvet curtains – in spite of my pounding headache I was still inspired to buy a drink.

I’ve never believed in the old wife’s tale that drinking a beer the morning after your crazy night will cure a hangover, but somewhere between drinking a delicious bellini (champagne, pineapple juice & peach schnapps) and eating an omelet, as well as some delicious crepes, my hangover disappeared.

If it’s approaching 2 p.m. and you’re still too hung over to make it the 12 blocks to News Caf?, try the M Street Grill, which is attached to St. Gregory’s hotel at 2033 M St. N.W., for a “jazzy Sunday pre-fixed brunch.” While the pretty abysmal jazz isn’t worth the $18.95, the continuously poured mimosas or bloody Marys are. Perhaps the most famous place for brunch in the District is Perry’s in Adams Morgan (located at 1811 Columbia Rd.). At Perry’s, drag queens will provide the entertainment while you munch on your seafood-inspired brunch buffet (for $26.95, not including drinks).

Brunch in the District is yet another outlet for all us seniors to postpone graduation, one drink at a time, and to prove to our parents when they come out for the dreaded day of May 21 just how well we know the city. In the meantime, drink your champagne-infused beverage or sip on your Tabasco-flavored bloody Mary knowing that you are partaking in one of the few things D.C. does notoriously well.
