The No. 10 GW men’s basketball team faces Richmond tomorrow at the Smith Center at noon. Since 1993, GW has won only four out of the last 11 games against the Spiders. Last year on Jan. 22, the Colonials lost at the Robbins Center in Richmond 70-59. T.J. Thompson hurt his leg and left the game early. On Feb. 12, GW beat the Spiders in Foggy Bottom 80-63.
This season, the Spiders have suffered a bit. Three-year coach Jerry Wainwright left for DePaul and the team is 11-9 and 4-3 in the Atlantic 10. Princeton-alum Chris Mooney took the helm and has tried to resuscitate the team. Losses have come by the hands of Virginia, Arkansas State, then-No.5 Louisville, Virginia Commonwealth, Wake Forest, Tulane, La Salle, Rhode Island and Fordham. The most impressive wins are against Charlotte and Saint Louis.
The team will be led by Columbia, Md., native Kevin Steenberge, who is averaging 9.7 points per game. Jermaine Bucknor is averaging 14 points per game this year.
