Hobbs: Akingbade to redshirt

Men’s basketball coach Karl Hobbs confirmed Wednesday that senior Dokun Akingbade will redshirt this season.

“I think it’s in his best interest and our best interest as a program to redshirt him because when we look out at our team next year we don’t have any experience coming back at that position,” Hobbs said after GW’s win over St. Francis (Pa.). “He will allow us to have experience next year. I think it’s a great thing for him and a great thing for the program.”

Akingbade, a forward/center, averaged 1.8 points per game last season. Hobbs said earlier this season that he is the most improved player in the program.

Akingbade was slated to be senior standout Pops Mensah-Bonsu’s primary backup, so the decision to sit him out this season reflects Athletic officials’ confidence that Mensah-Bonsu’s recent NCAA rules troubles have been resolved. Mensah-Bonsu sat out the first three games of the season for violating unspecified NCAA rules. A senior athletic official said Mensah-Bonsu is eligible to play Friday night against Boston University.
