Duques Hall to get Java City

Aramark will open a Java City caf? on the ground floor of Duques Hall this spring, when the new business school home begins holding classes next semester.

The coffee shop will be located in between Duques and Funger Hall, but only accessible from the business school or an outside entrance, said Louis Katz, executive vice president and treasurer. Katz said Aramark, the food-service provider that operates the Marvin Center’s J Street venues, has consistently expressed interest in operating a venue at the Duques site.

“We looked into what’s successful at other universities in academic buildings,” Katz said. “The (coffee shop) concept is doing well.”

GW’s Foggy Bottom campus is home to four Starbucks coffee shops and a Dunkin’ Donuts, which serves coffee drinks. The University houses a Java City caf? at the Mount Vernon Campus, and the Red Cross National Headquarters at 2025 E St. features the store.

Small fire ignites at Mehran

A small fire broke out at an on-campus restaurant Friday, causing fire trucks and Metropolitan Police to block off I Street and Pennsylvania Avenue for more than an hour.

At about 9 a.m. Friday morning, a fire broke out in one of the stoves at Mehran, a Pakistani restaurant located at 2138 Pennsylvania Ave. D.C. firefighters said a stove fire started while the restaurant’s chefs were cooking, and spread into the air ducts.

The extent of the damage was not immediately determined, but firefighters said it did not extend beyond the duct system. They also said that there were no injuries reported.

“What happened here is that a fire in the stove spread by means of other flammable substances into the air ducts,” said Alan Etter, a D.C. fire department spokesman. “As far as fires go, this was pretty minor.”

Several employees of the establishment stood outside of the restaurant as firefighters put out the fire. While the employees did not know much about what was happening inside, they said they had been evacuated immediately once the fire department arrived.
