Fraternity to host pop culture quiz bowl

The Sigma Nu fraternity will challenge the pop culture knowledge of Greek-letter groups at 7 p.m. Thursday when it hosts the Greek Bowl Quiz Tournament in the Hippodrome.

The fraternity expects to raise about $500 quizzing contestants from nine teams on trivia about popular music, movies and television shows.

Contestants might be asked to name two of the three “American Idol” winners, Sigma Nu Philanthropy Chair Paul Baumer said. (Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard won on the show’s first two seasons.)

Teams that answer the most questions correctly will advance through a bracket of rounds, and the fraternity will award trophies to the winning team. The Pi Kappa Phi fraternity won last year’s event.

“The Greek community is interested in this event because it’s a different, fun way to compete in a non-athletic fashion and a way to earn rights for organizations coming back next year to compete,” Baumer said.

The fraternity plans to donate all proceeds from the event to its national philanthropy, the American Diabetes Association.

“A lot of Greek groups enjoy doing the event, and we want to raise as much money as possible for a good cause,” Baumer said.
