Leave fantasy island

As far as I can tell from walking around campus, all of the candidates in the Student Association elections endorse loud music, free candy and mass littering. Now, I cannot turn down free candy, but the other two seem to be byproducts of the SA’s obsession with imitating the worst aspects of national politics.

The SA should concern itself with properly allocating funds to relevant student organizations, instead of attempting to create some fantasy of the West Wing. As a member of a student organization I am concerned about how the SA, and the candidates running for office, will fund my particular organization. However, I have seen few posters with candidates promising funding for particular interests; campaigns are instead trying to pass off the SA as a government body that would legislate campus law – whatever that means. Beyond allocating funds, it is unclear how the SA has any more power than I do as a patriotic, red-blooded American.

The SA still has merit, but all people can tell me about someone like Omar Woodard is that he has done “things” for “students.” I like having things done for me. I don’t count mass poster plastering, exorbitant food bills and other excessive campaigning among these “things.”

The SA candidates should step out of their politico fantasy world and actually try to address the students. Or, while an SA office looks fantastic on a resume, I suggest that they try interning on the Hill, doing community service or starting a recycling program to make the perfect resume they so desperately crave.
