A-10 honors Beck, Montana?a and Simmonds

The GW women’s basketball team cleaned up at the annual Atlantic 10 awards banquet Wednesday night at the Marriott Washington. Freshman Kimberly Beck was named Rookie of the Year and seniors Anna Montana?a and Jessica Simmonds were named first and second team all-conference players respectively.

Beck, a point guard from Fairburn, Ga., has won multiple Rookie of the Week honors and currently leads the league in assists. She is the seventh GW women player to receive this honor. The last Colonial was Ugo Oha in 2000-01.

“It’s a good award but it’s an individual award,” Beck said. “I wasn’t really expecting it, but I know we have been playing well lately.”

Montana?a is making her second straight appearance on the all-conference team. She is third in the conference with 16.9 points per game and scored a career high 27 against Xavier in the Smith Center on Feb. 20.

Simmonds led GW in rebounding and was seventh in the A-10 in scoring (14.5 points per game). After transferring from Providence College, she sat out last season before starring this year.

“I give credit to my teammates and coaches for giving me the chance this year to come here and play,” Simmonds said.

Player of the Year honors went to Candice Dupree of Temple while her coach, Dawn Staley, was named Coach of the Year. The Most Improved Player Award also went to an Owl, Kanesha Harriston.
