Fraternities, sororities ready for spring recruitment

Twelve fraternities and two sororities begin spring recruitment next week with a variety of events.

The spring recruitment period, traditionally shorter and less formal than fall recruitment, will take place between Jan. 31 and Feb. 5. Sigma Delta Tau and Phi Sigma Sigma are the only two of GW’s eight sororities recruiting new members this semester.

“By spring semester, if freshmen aren’t satisfied with what they have found at GW, we hope they will find what they’re looking for in a Greek organization,” said Kappa Sigma President Will Shaw.

The Kappa Sigma fraternity had 19 pledges last spring and is looking for another 10 to 15 new members this semester, Shaw said. He added, however, that the fraternity is “more concerned with character than number.”

Some of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority’s rush events include a “Meet and Greet” at the Marvin Center and watching “The O.C.” at T.G.I. Friday’s.

“Spring Rush is a lot more fun, more relaxed and less demanding,” said Sigma Delta Tau President Erin Mavian.

Sigma Delta Tau had four pledges last spring and is interested in taking “as many girls as possible” this semester, Mavian said.

Phi Sigma Sigma President Melissa Goldszer said the group, which is the smallest sorority, received 18 pledges last spring and has 14 spots available this semester.
