Lone AU goal soaks Colonials

The GW women’s soccer team’s offense was as non-existent as sunshine in the District Tuesday afternoon. As the remnant rains from Hurricane Jeanne fell on the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex, American shut out the Colonials 1-0.

Head coach Tanya Vogel said she is not discouraged by the loss, but instead sees the season as a building process.

“I don’t really think we did anything wrong,” Vogel said. “It’s a new time for GW soccer and we are a good team. As soon as we figure that out and actually believe in it, we will start taking care of games like this.”

The game’s lone goal came in the 42nd minute. Despite a strong defensive effort by the Colonials (3-4-2, 1-0 Atlantic 10), AU’s Marcela Ricupero found a hole and scored, putting the Eagles (8-1-1) ahead for good.

“They scored a solid goal and we had opportunities but didn’t put them away,” Vogel said. “I’m not worried about that because AU is a terrific team. When we start believing in ourselves, we’ll be okay.”

The Colonials had few opportunities in the contest, one being a shot by junior Ashley Squire in the 85th minute. GW misfired on one more shot, as the ball was rocketed out of bounds, ending the hopes for a Colonials’ comeback.

American’s goalkeeper, sophomore Alison Doyle, had five saves in her third shutout this season. GW junior keeper Anna Handzlik registered two saves in the loss.

The Colonials will resume action Friday with a home game against LaSalle at 3 p.m.

“We’ve got a tough opponent on Friday and we are just going to look to continue what we’ve been doing and try to put the ball in the back of the net,” Vogel said.
