Woman attacked, mugged on campus

A woman was punched in the face and robbed on the University Parking Garage’s second floor Saturday afternoon.

At 2 p.m., an unidentified male approached a woman from behind and hit her in the face several times before knocking her to the ground, said Metropolitan Police Officer Rayford Larkin. The garage is located at 22nd and H streets.

MPD officers scrambled to find the assailant, who fled north on 22nd Street. The suspect, a black male with a light complexion, had not been caught as of Sunday, according to a University Police Crime Alert.

The victim, Gloria Smith, of Upper Marlboro, Md., who is unaffiliated with the University, sustained a bruise on the right side of her face and scratches on her palms.

Smith, who was going to the GW Hospital to visit her husband, said the mugger took her purse, car keys and eyeglasses. After being treated by paramedics and questioned by MPD and UPD officers, Smith walked to the hospital, cushioning her face with an ice pack.
