Delta Tau Delta receives service award

The Delta Tau Delta fraternity accepted a community service award Saturday at a leadership conference in Lexington, Ky.

The fraternity was recognized for its participation in Jazz Night, a philanthropy event it started two years ago.

Each Friday, five or six members of the fraternity travel to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Southwest D.C. to set up the event for local residents. Attendees dine on Southern-style cuisine provided by Southwest Catering Company while listening to jazz music played by professional musicians.

“I think it says that we are definitely contributing to the D.C. community,” said Isaac Simpson, public relations chair for the fraternity. “It gives our fraternity a chance to expand our horizons … to see a part of D.C. most GW students don’t see.”

Three Delta Tau Delta chapters received the Southern Division Award for Special Recognition in Community Service. Governor of Kentucky Ernie Fletcher, a Delta Tau Delta alumnus, attended the ceremony.
