GW IN BRIEF

GW, Sprint gather old cell phones
The University and Sprint will be collecting used cell phones Thursday in Kogan Plaza from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The phones will be recycled or resold to benefit the National Organization on Disability and Easter Seals.

The first 100 people to donate phones will receive a $10 Metro card.

All types of phones will be accepted, and donations are tax deductible.

Representatives will also be on hand to discuss “Campus Watch,” a University Police and Sprint initiative aimed to increase campus safety. Student volunteers carry cell phones programmed to call a UPD officer in case the volunteer sees an emergency.

Thursday’s event is being co-sponsored by UPD, Alpha Phi Omega and the Student Association.

Ball raises funds for charity
Tickets are currently on sale for the Class Council’s third annual Charity Ball. The event will take place Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. in the Marvin Center Grand Ballroom. Tickets can be purchased for $15 at Ticketmaster on the ground floor of the Marvin Center.

Proceeds from the ball will go to Coaching for College, a volunteer program that focuses on helping students at Shaw Junior High School in D.C. with their academic skills and future aspirations.

The ball will feature dancing, giveaways and refreshments. Semi-formal dress is required.
