Women win swimming invitational

The GW women’s swimming team won the Potomac Relay Invitational at Georgetown Friday, while the men’s team placed second behind American.

The women annihilated the seven-team field, totaling 114 points to beat out second-place George Mason, which finished with 57 points. Sophomore Maggie Moss set a pool record in her leadoff leg of the women’s 3×100 backstroke relay as she, senior Ruth Dubyel and freshman Monica Pampell won the event, finishing six seconds ahead of the second-place Patriots.

The men’s team totaled 68 points to finish five ahead of third-place George Mason and 65 points behind American. The 800-yard freestyle relay team of freshmen Daniel Mahoney, Sean Flaherty and Jeffrey Cohn and junior Bryan Ferretti placed second in their event behind American.

GW’s next meet is Saturday at the Smith Center as the Colonials host James Madison University at 1 p.m.

Cross country teams compete at Penn State

The GW men’s cross country team placed 10th at the Penn State National Cross Country Race on Saturday, while the women took 16th place.

Senior Darrell Andruski finished first for the Colonial men in the eight-kilometer race, placing 29th overall. Senior Dave Azari finished second for the Colonials after being named Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week on Oct. 13 for the second time this season.

Freshman Bridget Skeuse finished 16th overall to lead the women.

Both GW teams compete next at the A-10 Championships, beginning Nov. 1 in Philadelphia.

Cross country teams compete at Penn State

The GW men’s water polo team defeated Salem International University Friday, 11-9, in the first round of the Collegiate Water Polo Inter-Regional Competition.

Senior Pat Dodge scored five goals to lead the Colonials (6-7), who were down 6-3 at halftime. The GW defense took over in the second half, allowing just three goals while the offense broke open for eight goals.

Sophomore Nicholas Koenemann scored four goals for GW, while junior goalkeeper Chris Blick made nine saves in the win. The tournament at Princeton University continued throughout the weekend, but further results were unavailable at press time.
