Women’s tennis nabs fifth at A-10s

The GW women’s tennis team earned a fifth-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships at College Park, Md. this weekend. The fifth-seeded Colonials lost to eventual runner-up Massachusetts but went on to beat Dayton in match for fifth place Saturday.

Second-seeded Temple won the tournament for the first time since 1995, defeating fourth-seeded Massachusetts in the final round. Top-seeded Xavier took third place, losing to third-seeded Richmond.

The Colonials (4-10), who entered the tournament on a five-game losing streak, grabbed a decisive victory in their final match over Dayton Saturday. GW got wins from sophomores Natasha Bode and Sevla Gonca, Bode’s fourth straight in the Tournament and Gonca’s second-straight.

Dayton, the Tournament’s eighth seed, beat Rhode Island and Fordham but dropped to the losers’ bracket with a loss to top-seeded Xavier.

The Colonials secured their place in Saturday’s fifth-place game with a win over Duquesne earlier in the day. Seniors Tracy Wei and Samantha Fisher earned victories in their final GW matches as Wei defeated Dayton’s Alina Klinova 6-4, 6-2 at the number one spot while Fisher defeated Sarah Shanahan 6-3, 6-2.

Thursday, the Colonials suffered a second-round loss to UMass 4-1 with their only win coming from Bode, who defeated Denise Chambers 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Earlier that day, GW started the tournament on a high note, beating first-round opponent La Salle 5-0. The Colonials earned singles victories from Bode, Gonca, junior Lindy First and freshman Estee Bartell and swept all three doubles matches.

With seniors Jen Sunshine, Wei and Fisher set to graduate this spring, next season the Colonials will look to First and Gonca for team leadership.
