Record number of participants make A-10 shootout a success

The third annual Atlantic-10 Shootout was held Thursday, Feb. 20 at the Lerner Health & Wellness Center. The event was a huge success with a GW record of 120 teams participating.

In the women?s division, Taryn Schayberg and Suzanne Cole beat out the competition to take home two round-trip tickets on US Airways while the men?s division saw an exciting final where Joe Cope and Raj Datwani held on to take home US Airways tickets.

Men’s and women’s teams could also compete in the co-ed division and the top four teams advanced to halftime of the men?s basketball game vs. LaSalle on Saturday. With an extremely boisterous crowd on hand, seniors Andy Wilson and Kiara Burrell defeated seniors Tim Casey and Tiffany Smith 26-25 to advance on to the A-10 Men’s Basketball tournament in Dayton, Ohio where they?ll compete against other schools? A-10 Shootout winners for $10,000. The second place team took home free sneakers from New Balance.

The shootout had more than just three-point bombs and broken hearts; there were many free goodies for participants, including T-shirts, radios, food and drink. Overall, the participants as well as the Atlantic-10 were very pleased with the turnout.

“The students had a great time,” said Kath Cloran, marketing director for the A-10 shootout. “The free giveaways were a big crowd-pleaser, and the facilities were tremendous. We look forward to seeing even more participants next year.”
