Women ranked in AP Top 25

The Colonial Women were ranked No. 21 on the Associated Press Top 25 Women’s College Basketball Rankings released earlier this week, the only Atlantic 10 school to hold a place on the poll.

For the first time in history, Duke’s women took the number one spot, receiving 38 out of 44 first place votes. The University of Tennessee’s Lady Vols, who GW will face Nov. 26, dropped to second after leading the poll a record 10 times.

Brigham Young University, which GW plays at home Dec. 11, did not make the rankings but received 46 votes overall.

On other preseason polls, the Colonials have been ranked as high as No. 11 (Street and Smith) and as low as No. 25 (ESPN/USA Today).

The honor is not a new one for GW, which was ranked 20th in the AP poll heading into the 2002 season but dropped out after losses to North Carolina State, Tennessee and Rice University.
