Web Extra:Three Colonials garner A-10 honors

After his first place finish at the Temple Owl Invitational Sunday, freshman golfer Andrew Gallo was one of three Colonials to take home Atlantic 10 awards last week. Gallo was named A-10 Performer of the Week for all sports and was also named Rookie of the Week for men’s golf.

After finishing the 36-hole tournament tied with two other players, Gallo won with a bogey on the second playoff hole and became only the fourth Colonial in the last nine years to win an individual tournament title.

GW women’s soccer goalkeeper Kelly Paolucci received recognition for her solid play in front of the net, named A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week for women’s soccer.

The freshman led GW to two shutout wins at home last weekend and has emerged as the team’s starting goalie. Playing in seven of the team’s 10 games this season and starting the last four, Paolucci now has a team-high 44 saves and has allowed 13 goals.

Volleyball rookie Lindsey Vernand capped off the impressive week for the Colonials’ freshman athlete class, taking home A-10 Rookie of the Week for volleyball.

The outside hitter tied her season-high 13 kills in her team’s win over LaSalle Friday night and ranks second on the team in digs this season with 205. In two matches last week, Vernand averaged 2.3 kills and 2.7 digs per game.
