Letter: Wrong fight

While I was unable to attend the protests against the upcoming war on Iraq, I feel a need to respond to Matthew Hillson’s (“Protestors miss big picture,” Oct. 3, p.1) call for a crusade against the “politics of whim.” In truth, this fight ought to be placed at his feet, and the feet of those who believe that current President George W. Bush is indeed fighting a humanitarian struggle in his war on terrorism. It is insulting for Hillson to tell members of the protest, who often find the source of oppression in the governments and corporations of the industrialized West, that they do not truly empathize with the oppressed of the world. He calls for a clash of civilizations in which the “backward” are annihilated.

The struggle for global human rights begins at home, even on our campus. To blame a nebulous cultural enemy first, and to seek to destroy it with military power later, accomplishes nothing. Our principles of democracy are indeed precious, but in looking at the current situation I might ask Hillson to recall another fine European tradition – imperialism.
